Chiang Mai For New Years!

 

I was so lucky that my dad decided to take the whole family to Thailand this year for new years, we had such an amazing time and i really love it there. Its funny, looking back over my images (with my heightened view for critical thinking) Im starting to realise certain patterns that come through my work, the corners of buildings for example and alterations in depth of field and focus. 

Project 11: The Unseen

Based on the idea of hidden personalities and heavily influenced by Cindy Sherman, these images represent 3 different extrovert personalities that are hidden underneath a 'normal' looking canvas. The model for all three images was the same however i tried to make her look as different as possible as if it were 3 completely separate people in  the shoots. Props were a massive pain in the arse, the mirrors were surprisingly hard to smash to look as if it were water and the fireworks took 3 people to light whilst i was shooting. 

I wouldnt mind continuing with this brief and creating more and more personalities, almost like a documentary journal of all the different characters.

This brief was given to me just before the Easter Holidays and so, i was returning to Dubai for the break. I decided to base this project on Dubai, mainly because i knew nobody else would have anything similar to my work. I wanted to try and convey how quickly Dubai has grown from such a small fishing village to a massive holiday and commercial destination in only a matter of decades. I LOVE taking pictures of the desert, theres just so much to offer its hard to go wrong. Unfortunately, a sand storm hit when I was photographing my second shoot, but this ended up lending itself to the sequence, suggesting the hostile environment that the desert actually is. 

Project 6: Personal Profile

This brief was a result of a few studio workshops, their aim was to try and get us to express emotion and try and convey a persons personality and background through the use of location, position and lighting. I chose to work with a janitor who works up at my campus and i see on a daily basis. He's always smiling and i thought would be fun to do a little impromptu shoot with!

I used 2 Bowens lights, one inside the stockroom where he keeps all of his equipment, and one shone onto him with a softbox. I learnt an important lesson with this brief, GET TO KNOW YOUR MODEL. It makes it easier to direct them, makes them feel more comfortable and just gets things moving alot quicker. Below is the final image for this brief.

Project 5: Fashion Identity

So in this project we were told to create a sequence of clothes that follow a specific identity, it would be easier to collaborate with a fashion designer or someone with a keen interest in that look, so i approached a good friend of mine: Alexander 'Sandy' Huck who created and styled the outfits for me. I had the intention of shooting in an exterior location and wanted the whole sequence to have a sort of 'gypsy-chic' feel to it, so that was the style of clothing chosen for my models.

I chose to use 2 of my friends to model because their chemistry worked well for this shoot and they weren't going to be shy around each other, plus it was easier to direct someone i knew. The chosen location for the shoot was Corsham Court, just outside of Bath which is part of our uni campus, so it was easy to gain access to the surrounding grounds. The weather for the shoot luckily stayed decent, if not a bit chilly, and i was able to use mainly natural light for the whole shoot, however i used an exterior Bowens kit for one of the images.

The brief had stated that these images would be used for a commercial context so they had to be edited into an Indesign format, as if it would be printed in a magazine or 'look book' (which i ended up actually creating.) The Indesign layout is as above!

Project 4: Moving Image with Space, Place and Location.

This brief is a little different from the others, instead of taking one individual image i will taking a moving image (film) of a place in Bath that has specific significance to me. We started to think about a place that is important to me, and being in a new city i realised that it would be somewhere where i feel comfortable and at home. 'Picnic in the Park' is a little cafe on the upper bristol road into Bath, and i walk past the cafe everytime i walk up to uni. Its got lovely wooden floors and writing on the walls and they serve the best full english breakfast i have ever had.

The moving image would be inspired by the stop start imagery used in the opening sequence of the hit tv series, 'Dexter'. The final piece would be edited to show a range of viewpoints of the cafe and why it is significant to me as an individual. We needed to add some music to it so we added a calm song by Jack Johnson, hope you like the final edit below!
